In this 2-day Bowspring workshop, John Friend will guide students of any level into an in-depth exploration of the sacred geometry of their upper and lower extremities – Wings (hands, arms, and shoulders) & Roots (feet, legs, and hips). The universal geometry applies in basic daily postures like sitting, standing, and walking – and also in a variety of Bowspring exercises and dynamic postures which help to energetically open the mind-body in a vibrant, therapeutic way.
Students will be guided to be aware of their postural habits in a whole new way which will reveal the source of chronic shoulder or hip issues. Each part of the Wings and Roots has an unconscious somatic default postural alignment which creates a ‘closed’, ‘armored’, ‘blocked’ position to help energetically protect the individual. Under anxiety, fear, sadness, feelings of lack, or anger our Wings close and our Roots pull up and in. In contrast to this somatically closed position, the Bowspring is a dynamic postural alignment which is wavy and curvy in its universal geometry, providing optimal functional movement and therapeutic power to both the Wings and Roots.
Although every body is different – in shape, age, flexibility, and medical history – every body is patterned with a similar geometric proportion, and with the same relationship to a universal morphogenic template of the human body. By knowing the alignment and directionality of the fascia which opens or closes the Wings or Roots, then anyone can be empowered to improve their regular, everyday posture in ways to relieve chronic pain, increase agility, and open somatically for vibrant well-being.
While this workshop will teach tremendously therapeutic alignments for the wrists, elbows, shoulders, necks, feet, knees, hips, and lower back, the power of the Bowspring will also be experienced at deeper psychic and spiritual levels through the somatic openings in the pelvic floor, belly, throat and heart. Ultimately, experiencing the power of the sacred geometry of the Wings and Roots in our own unique embodiment awakens us to our universal spiritual source.

The weekend experience would give all levels of experience – raw beginners to teachers an uplifting workshop to recharge their spirit and infuse their mind-body with vibrant life force through the practice of the Bowspring alignment and breath work.
Each class would be progressive and cumulative – elements of the Bowspring method building on each other, but the classes will remain basic and doable for everyone.
John will accommodate any physical limitations, so all levels of students are welcome.
A focus of the weekend will be on skillfully looking at our unconscious patterns of functional movement and default posture which are often the source of our pain, joint degeneration, stiffness, and low vitality.
We will explore how traumas and negative thought patterns affect us somatically — in our posture and the field of our energy body.
And we will practice Bowspring in ways to clear old patterns that are not serving us, and to reform our alignment for the highest mind-body health.

An innovative teacher in the yoga world since 1980, John Friend has taught more than 800 yoga seminars in over 30 countries to tens of thousands of students. In 1997, John created Anusara yoga, leading hatha yoga system that is still practiced worldwide today.
In 2012, John began studying the new alignment ideas of Desi Springer, which were in contradiction to his Anusara alignment principles and to the standard model for postural alignment. Supported by the emerging science in the field of fascia and its role in optimal posture and functional movement, John and Desi co-created the Bowspring method in 2013.
With independent-thinking and spiritually oriented students, John loves to share his 50+ years of studies of philosophy, consciousness-expanding practices, and wholistic mind-body health.
